ESC 1022

Stellar and Galactic Astronomy

Spring 2010 semester

Instructor: Philip Harrington

ESC 1022 focuses on the universe beyond the solar system: the structure and evolution of the sun and stars, the structure, motion, and evolution of the Milky Way, and the large scale structure of the universe of galaxies beyond the Milky Way. The semester concludes with an introduction to cosmology, the study of the overall origin and structure of the universe.

On this Web site, you will find the course syllabus and schedule, lab schedule, homework assignments and lab assignments as they are assigned, requirements for the term project, as well as a long list of links that students may find valuable as we travel through the universe together during the semester.

Students are encouraged to explore the Internet resources listed here, especially the home page of our textbook.  Links to that Web site are provided from both the Syllabus and Astronomical News pages, as well as right here.  The textbook website offers late-breaking news items, addenda to the book, as well as practice tests useful for studying.

Note:

You are going to need Adobe Reader software to view and download some of the forms and handouts on this website.  You can download it for free by clicking here and following the instructions.  If you have trouble downloading the software, the college's computers already have the software installed.
