Design of an Energy Efficient Outdoor Nighttime Urban Lighting System

Back in 1995, Phil Harrington completed a Master's degree in environmental engineering from New York Institute of Technology.  As terminal project for the degree, a thesis on a topic related in some manner to an environmental issue was required.  What better topic for an amateur astronomer to write about than light pollution?  This thesis does not battle light pollution from an astronomical viewpoint, however; rather, it looks at the subject from an environmental/energy perspective.

With the hope that others might be able to use the information and data collected within, Phil's thesis was into converted into .PDF format and posted here.  Note that Adobe Reader will be needed (available for free from http://www.adobe.com) to view it's 60+ pages.

...to open the thesis and take a look.  Rather than include scanned-in attachments, a number of links have been established to their original sources.  You will find those links in the list of attachments in the opening pages of the thesis.

This thesis is offered at no charge, but with three restrictions:

  • First, if you happen to be writing a Master's thesis, don't just hand mine in as yours.  You'll find it's a pretty specific study, especially toward the end.
  • Second, please do not sell copies for profit, although it may be printed for your own personal, one-time use.
  • Finally, if it is distributed in any (not-for-profit) manner, please pass on the appropriate credit.

As always, your comments are welcome.
